Buy this painting for £10,000 in Monopoly money

I’m selling one of my original paintings for £10,000.

But I’m only accepting Monopoly money.

Not as a joke. As an experiment about art and value, and who decides what things are worth.

To be in the running, just post me a note saying why you want the piece. It can be funny, heartfelt, poetic, odd — anything but boring.

The story behind the project

This idea sparked when I saw that Monopoly is releasing a new cashless version in August. It got me thinking about value in the art world.

How can a banana taped to a wall sell for over $6 million because a bunch, (pun intended), of critics say it’s worth that, while so many artists struggle to sell originals or even prints? It’s the Emperor’s New Clothes in a banana skin.

So I thought, why not let people spend their old Monopoly cash on my painting?

I’m saying out loud, “This painting is worth £10,000.” Saying it publicly is my way of building belief in myself, even if it’s only fake money for now.

I’m not waiting for a gallery, a critic, or an algorithm to decide I’m worthy. I’m saying it out loud, and having fun with it.

The Painting

My art isn’t mainstream. I like to do things differently.

This piece is mixed media on deep-edge canvas, A2 size (42 x 59.4 cm).

I started by painting “This is worth £10,000” directly onto the canvas.

Then added the question, “Who decides?”

I collaged a barcode with £10,000 underneath, and the word value on one side.

A pound sign falls from one of the eyes.

How it works

Send me £10,000 in Monopoly money and a note saying why you want the piece.

The note can be quirky, funny, poetic, heartfelt, anything but boring. It doesn’t have to be long.

I’ll be choosing one person to get the painting based on the note.

Deadline: 7 August 2025
Collector announced: 14 August 2025

I’ll be sharing some of the notes on social media (anonymously if you prefer).

International Entries

Postage charges in "real money" apply for outside of the UK. Apparently the parcel companies don’t share my artistic vision and won’t accept fake money. UK postage free.
